July 2013 Marvel Comics Diamond Previews Review

July 2013 Marvel Comics Diamond Previews Review

Infinity #2           While DC has gone evil for September Marvel is trying to stop that from happening as Infinity crosses over with many of the Avengers, and Avengers related titles. If there was one group I would worry about in this crossover it would be the Inhumans as Jonathan Hickman (W) and Jerome Opena & Dustin Weaver (A) bring bad things to Attilan in issue #3 of the 6 issue main series.

New Avengers #10 InfAvengers #19 InfAvengers #20 InfThunderbolts #15 Inf Nova #8 InfSuperior Spider-Man Team-Up #3 InfCaptain Marvel #16 InfAvengers Assemble #19 Inf          This Thanos centric crossover also graces the pages of New Avengers #10, Avengers #19 & #20, Thunderbolts #15 (I smell an attempt to boost sales), Nova #8, Avengers Assemble #19, Captain Marvel #16, and oddly enough Superior Spider-Man Team-Up #3 & #4.

Infinity Hunt #1           Two mini series spinning out of Infinity are intriguing and uses the Thanos invasion as an interesting framing plot point. Infinity: The Hunt #1 (of 4) by Matt Kindt (W, and appearing everywhere now), and Steven Sanders (A) tells the story of a new Contest of Champions, arranged by Wolverine, Hank Pym, and She Hulk, and what happens when there contest is interrupted by Thanos and his invading forces. I wonder if the poor snuff victims in Avengers Academy will be referenced at all?

Infinity Heist #1           Over in Infinity: Heist #1 (of 4) it’s the time old tale of the cat being away and the mice being at play. Spymaster and a team of villains seize the opportunity to strike when all of the heroes are occupied with Thanos. While it is a story we have seen in many forms this one is being handled by Frank Tieri (W) and Ramon Bachs (A), a creative team that will introduce something new to the mix. It may be hard to resist picking these up in single issues, but trying the first issue wouldn’t hurt.

Mighty Avengers #1 Inf Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #27           The release that has been getting allot of attention in the comic book press is the relaunch of the Mighty Avengers. This time with Al Ewing (W) and Greg Land (A) behind the wheel. The critics, both professional and armchair, such as myself, have gone back and forth about this title. It is interesting to note that this is an entirely minority team of heroes, with the possible exception of Spider-Man. With Wolverine having broken time it would not be surprising to see Ultimate Spider-Man, Miles Morales, behind the mask and mingling with the heroes of the 616. Is this a possible ploy? It could be. Does it look like a possible origin story that makes sense? Yes and no. Will it be worth picking up? I think it will.

Superior Spider-Man #17 Superior Spider-Man #18           It looks like Dan Slott’s previous hints to an appearance by the future web-head proved true as Spider-Man 2099 appears in the pages of both Superior Spider-Man #17 & #18. If stories like this are the result of Wolverine breaking time then I am in! I will be getting these for sure.

Morbius Living Vampire #9           No surprise that Morbius: The Living Vampire #9 is the last of the series. Joe Keatinge (W) and Richard Elson (A) try to bring closure to a book that Marvel never really promoted or involved with the larger Marvel universe. While I tried the first few issues, it was good, but needed to find it’s footing and sadly it will not get to fulfill its potential. Hopefully the character gets put into a supporting role in another book because the only way Morbius can work is to have a proper reintroduction into the Marvel Universe, in the background. Cultivate him to the point he can headline his own book for at least a year.

Hawkeye #15           Hawkeye is easily one of the best books Marvel is putting out and their covers are some of the most creative on the market, and issue #15 is an example of a strong cover design from artist David Aja.

X-Men Battle of Atom #1           With time already broken, what would be the best thing to add to the mix? Another team of X-Men, and this time from the future. X-Men: Battle of the Atom begins in September and Brian Michael Bendis (W) and Frank Cho (A), in the first issue of the main mini series. This issue kicks off a ten issue crossover. I will be checking out the first issue seeing if it would be worth waiting for the inevitable collection.

All-New X-Men #16 X-Men #5 Now Uncanny X-Men #12 Now           Also part of this X-Men event are: All-New X-Men #16, X-Men #5, and Uncanny X-Men #12.

X-Factor #262           The long running fan favorite series X-Factor, comes to an end with issue #262. This is a sad ending for a book that has survived so many crossovers, so many changes to the Marvel universe, and yet succeeded in carving it’s own niche, setting it apart from the other mutant titles on the stands. I am hoping that the announced second wave of Marvel Now includes a relaunched X-Factor. It isn’t a book that will stay dead for very long. Not to mention where the characters may land? I hope Multiple Man finds a home somewhere.

Gambit #17           Gambit ends with its 17th issue. I am honestly surprised that the book lasted that long. Not to slight James Asmus (W) and Clay Mann (A), because they do great work. I just think Marvel did not support this book like they should have, much the same with the tragically under appreciated Journey Into Mystery which has been canceled.

Ultimate Comics Divided We Fall United We Stand TP           The Ultimate line has been hit or miss for me since the wholesale slaughter that was Ultimatum. Once in awhile a storyline will grab my attention and the write ups that appeared in the solicitations definitely grabbed my interest. I am happy to report that the entire story will be appearing in one 408 page collection. This is the way to change a comic book universe without killing off most of your characters. The USA is fragmented and while Captain America rallies the troops to help reform the crumbling country, Kitty Pryde leads to protect her kind from the deadly Sentinels. Miles Morales will do anything to prove he has what it takes to join the Ultimates to help when the country is at their darkest. With Brian Wood, Sam Humphries, and Brian Michael Bendis writing, I am sold.

And with that we complete our look at Marvel for September 2013. See you soon when we look at the rest of the book.

June 2013 Marvel Comics Diamond Previews Review

June 2013 Marvel Comics Diamond Previews Review

It’s time to look at Previews for product shipping in August of 2013, and in particular Marvel Comics. Now I will get this out of the way, Marvel Now, for the most part, did not do it for me. That is not to say that there are not some gems that shine through but it seems, for the most part, especially with the announcement of the Minority …. err ….. Mighty Avengers, that everything is slowly becoming about said Avengers and I cannot help but wonder when every hero will be a member, because in all honesty what it meant at one time to be an Avenger is kind of watered down at this point. There, my rant is done, let’s dive into the solicitations.

Infinity #1           The next event officially kicks off in August with the launch of Infinity. The first issue of a six issue mini. This story brings Thanos into the Marvel Now universe and hopefully it is better than the mini-series that focused on his earlier years, because that was not really a Thanos that struck a chord with many readers, and if Thanos is the big bad he has to come across allot more interesting. Some of the early character designs that have been revealed have been captivating but I can’t help but feel that Marvel already has a large library of characters to mine, either way I will check this issue out to see if I will trade wait for it.

Avengers #17 Avengers #18  Captain Marvel #15Avengers Assemble #18

With an event we also get official tie ins and Infinity is no exception. Avengers #17 and #18, Avengers Assemble #18, New Avengers #9, Captain Marvel #15, Thunderbolts #14, and the previously mentioned, and disappointing Thanos Rising #5, all make up the tie in line up for August.

Thanos Rising #5Thunderbolts #14New Avengers #9           For some of the books it makes sense, namely the Avengers titles as they show the battle from two different fronts, in space, and on Earth. The other ones I suspect are attempts to save titles that may not be selling as much, not because of quality as Captain Marvel is definitely one of the strongest female centric books on the market. Hopefully this crossover will give them the bump they need.

In all honesty this crossover does not excite me as it seems more of the same, with a cast change from the last big bad space war, but I could be wrong, and the creative teams involved are strong, but we will see what happens when August hits.

Secret Avengers #8           While I do enjoy Secret Avengers and will continue to pick it up in trade format but it really should be retitled to perhaps Agents of SHIELD since the ties to the Avengers are really tenuous, and being a secret type of team that leaves their operatives without the memories of their missions, how can this be called an Avengers title? AIM continues to rear it’s ugly head in issue #8 of the Nick Spencer written and Luke Ross drawn series, as the notorious group of evil scientists lash out at Secret Avengers after their attack on AIM Island.

Avengers Arena #13           The brutal blood bath that is Avengers Arena (again barely an Avengers title, not sure why it has Avengers in their name) begins the last story that will end Season 1 of this horrible Battle Royale/Hunger Games rip off. I know I seem harsh with this title, and there are several people who read the book but I am not a fan of the needless deaths of so many characters who are already in peoples hearts or have not had a chance to actually shine.

Avengers AI #2           Over in Avengers A.I. #2 we see the return of the Sentient Iron Man armor. My question about this is how story driven is this, or is it done for the sake of having a character, no matter how remotely tied to a major box office player, or is it actually story driven? If the first issue interests me then I will find out when the first arc is out in hardcover, well I am assuming hardcover.

Hunger #2           Hunger #2 of 4 comes out in August, and for some reason the Age of Ultron brings forth Galactus, again this is an assumption on my part, but purple and Hunger? Pretty Galactus like to me.

Superior Spider-Man Team Up #2 Scarlet Spider #20           Spider-fans take note, in Superior Spider-Man Team Up #2 and Scarlet Spider #20 and #21 features the meeting between Kaine and the man who he killed, Doc Ock, who, as we all know is in control of Peter’s complete identity. Doc Ock has an axe to grind but can he put aside his anger and not blow his identity?

Guardians of the Galaxy #6Rocket Racoon TP Tales From Half World           With the upcoming release of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie picking up steam you can expect Marvel to try and capitalize on an increased interest in a one time little known property and it is starting already with the release of Rocket Raccoon: Tales from Half-World. This trade collects the four issue mini-series that brought Rocket Raccoon’s early exploits to life, with appearances from Bucky O’Hare and his first mate Wal Russ. Rocket Raccoon and Guardian enthusiasts should grab this book. In addition to this Rocket trade you are treated to another Neil Gaiman co-written issue of Guardians of the Galaxy. In issue 6 of the series Angela continues her attack on the Guardians, and first up is Gamora. This will be an amazing (hopefully anyway) introduction of a one time Image character into the Marvel Universe.

Journey Into Mystery #655           August also sees the end of one of the most under appreciated runs coming out of Marvel, Journey Into Mystery written by Kathryn Immonen, and art by Valerio Schiti. Issue #655 marks the last issue for the far too short run that focused on one of the most fascinating, and stronger female characters in the Marvel Universe. I would honestly love to see her join the Avengers, or the Defenders, and in the case of the Defenders, I would actually try out the title again. An added bonus would be to see the same creative team work with Sif, maybe in a new series, or team book. An all female Avengers would work, and let’s face it, it is only a matter of time before every title has Avengers in it.

Daredevil #30           Oddest guest star of the month is Silver Surfer, appearing in the pages of Daredevil #30 by Mark Waid (W) and Chris Samnee (A). The Silver Surfer is a character who has been little seen as of late and one can’t help but wonder if this is the start to a comeback? With Galactus, or a facsimile of, returning in the Hunger mini-series, there may be some connection to this return.

Captain America #10           Good news for those that felt the way I did about the odd direction in Captain America, it seems to be coming to a close in Captain America #10 where we have the finale for the Dimension Z story. This title was one I was originally excited about but quickly found it to be far to weird for me, and I did not feel like I was reading a Captain America book. Hopefully whatever comes after this will be better and return Steve Rogers to a time and place that makes a little more sense for the character.

Dexter #2           The second issue of the five issue Dexter mini-series is actually solicited for August. This is impressive and I would not have been surprised to see this issue missing from the pages considering all the false starts this book has had.

Uncanny X-Men #10           Dazzler is a character Marvel seems to be trying hard to bring the forefront of the Marvel Universe, first by placing her in charge of a rag tag group of time travellers in The Exiles …. er I mean X-Treme X-Men, but of course that title failed, and instead of placing Dazzler on the shelf for a little bit she is now joining the ranks of SHIELD. I suspect Disney is eying Dazzler as a potential role model for young Disney girls. A pop singer who has light based powers is right up their alley. Dazzler joins the government organization in Uncanny X-Men #10 by Brian Michael Bendis (W) and Frazer Irving (A). The remainder of the X titles look to be more of the same, with nothing exceptional really jumping out.

Daredevil by Miller and Janson Omnibus HC           Collections are a different story with several titles of interest showing up in the solicitations. Frank Miller and Klaus Janson’s run on Daredevil is collected in a new printing of the omnibus collection. This is one of the best respected, most well known, and original runs in Daredevils history. While Daredevil is not a must have for me, this is a classic run that should be in every collection when looking at career defining runs.

Avengers Endless Wartime OGN HC           The original graphic novel, Avengers: Endless Wartime, by Warren Ellis (W) and Mike McKone (A) and features a well used plot of a danger from the past being unearthed and the heroes having to rally. With Warren Ellis penning the tale I hope that some freshness is introduced. With Avengers in the title it will surely sell.

Hawkeye HC vol 01           One hardcover that is coming home with me will be Hawkeye Vol. 1 HC collecting issues #1-11 and Young Avengers Presents #6. This is one of the best, if not the best book that Marvel is putting out and is an amazing example of a risk taken, and the company promoting the book, showing absolute faith in something that was so different from anything else in their publishing line up. This is a classic, and will be held up as a run to be remembered.

And with that I bring my look at Marvel for August to an end. Up next, DC!

May 2013 Marvel Comics Diamond Previews Review

May 2013 Marvel Comics Diamond Previews Review

The latest Previews has been out for a couple of weeks and I have spent quite some time pouring over it. I am taking a big leap this week and switching to trades on more than half of my titles currently on my pull list, and dropping a few titles, while starting to pick up back titles featuring creators I have grown to appreciate in my nearly 3 decade long love of the comic book art form. I am excited about focusing my collecting, and my bank account will like it too.

Let’s take a look at Marvel. First let me actually insert a disclaimer, for most titles I am dropping it is not a matter of quality more a matter of relevance when looking at my collection as a whole, and what I like to read. Now back to Marvel.

Avengers #16 InfAvengers #15 Inf           Early indicators point to Marvel Now being a success but sadly it wasn’t for me, with most titles I tried, never making it past the third or fourth issue, some outright stopping at one. There are a handful of titles that have kept me interested and they will all be moving to trade waiting status. This was a difficult choice because the books I still follow represent, in my opinion, some of the more exciting ideas to come out of Marvel Now, and each title has such a strong future. A future that we are seeing built right before our eyes. The Marvel Universe has become even bigger than we ever imagined.

Thanos Rising #4 InfNew Avengers #8 Inf           First up is what I consider the flagship of the entire Marvel Universe, the Avengers. Issues #15 and #16 continue on the prelude path to Infinity.  As much as I want to see how Thanos becomes relevant once again I will wait to pick up the hardcover that is sure to be just down the road. For monthly purchasers though these are must have issues with the beginning of the first Marvel Now crossover storyline. Speaking of Infinity, over in New Avengers #8 we have another prelude tie in. This issues looks to further address the rift that has formed between T’Challa and Namor over Namor’s destructive acts to the Wakandans, while possessed by a portion of the Phoenix.

Avengers AI #1           July is the month when the after effects from The Age of Ultron begins to be felt, and what better way than to launch another Avengers monthly? (Sarcasm is tough to convey while using a keyboard.) This one definitely seems to tap an interesting angle by being a team of artificial lifeforms, and is led by Hank Pym. Avengers A.I. #1 is written by Sam Humphries with art by Andre Lima Araujo, and will be coming home with me. I will try the first 3 issues to see if this will become a part of my trade waiting books.

Guardians of the Galaxy #5 Now           One of the most interesting side effects of the Age of Ultron story is the introduction of the Neil Gaiman created, and one time Spawn cast member, Angela, to the Marvel Universe. Issue #5 of The Guardians of the Galaxy has her first post Age of Ultron appearance. If that isn’t enough to intrigue you then perhaps the addition of Neil Gaiman as co-writer should be enough to make this a must read. I lost interest right off the hop with this series but I cannot pass up the chance to check out a book that may or may not break the internet.

Another tie in to the Ultron saga is one shrouded in secrecy is Age of Ultron #10 U.C.. Nothing is known about this title, not even the creative team, and the acronym U.C. remains a mystery. Curiosity is making me add this to my order.

What If AVX #4What If AVX #1What If AVX #3What If AVX #2

I have been a fan of the What If books right from the first volume and I am excited that we get a new What If series in July. This time it is a 4 issue mini-series that shows us a radically different path of events for the Avengers Vs. X-Men crossover. Jimmy Palmiotti (W) and Jorge Molina (A) brings us these four issues with the hopes that this brings about a more regular publishing schedule for the Marvel Alterniverse.

Uncanny Avengers #10 Now           Dead characters are brought back again, this time as the Four Horsemen of Death in the pages of Uncanny Avengers #10. What happened to the other three Horsemen? Haven’t characters been brought back enough? First the multitude of Living and Unliving Legions, to Necrosha, to Chaos War, this has been done. Here’s hoping the storyline is bringing something new to this over used plot idea.

Avengers Assemble #17Captain Marvel #14           It will be interesting to see if the Captain Marvel crossover with Avengers Assemble did anything to help save the series. I expect to see a final issue notation in a near future Previews. This one is definitely not due to quality. Kelly Sue DeConnick has done an amazing job of writing Carol Danvers story and I for one hope that it survives this possible cancellation. Issue #14 of her series sees the final chapter of “The Enemy Within”. This could be one of those character defining stories that will set the standard for who Carol is. This book is worth a look.

Superior Spider-Man Team-Up #1           Superior Spider-Month is an exciting time to be a fan of the wall crawler, at least for those that didn’t explode after reading the latest issue, as Marvel launches 3 new Spidey centric comics. Superior Spider-Man Team-Up #1 replaces Avenging Spider-Man on the publishing roster and the first issue features the creative team of Christopher Yost (W) and David Lopez (A). With recent developments it will make potential team-ups all the more interesting.

Superior Carnage #1           Carnage returns more deadly than before in the pages of the Kevin Shinick written and Stephen Segovia drawn Superior Carnage #1, the first in a four issue mini-series that introduces a new Carnage to the world, one that is more dangerous and unpredictable than any before.

Superior Foes of Spider-Man #1           The final launch is The Superior Foes of Spider-Man, a villain centric book from Nick Spencer (W) and Steve Lieber (A). This is an ongoing and considering it’s focus will be villains, it may have a tough road ahead for it. Nick Spencer has proven that he can handle the bad with his work speaking for itself in the pages of Morning Glories.

Morbius Living Vampire #7 Now           I am assuming that Marvel is trying to bump up Morbius a bit as issue #7 is a tie into Superior Spider-Month. The main thrust here will be sales. This is an interesting book and while I didn’t love the first few issues, I didn’t hate them either. If the Morbius series fails then maybe Marvel could give the Midnight Sons another go?

Indestructible Hulk #11           It has been heavily speculated that Indestructible Hulk #11 could be Age of Ultron effects spilling over into the Marvel Universe with the very ominous sounding “History’s breaking”, in the solicitation.

Dexter #1           Dexter #1 is solicited again…not going to say much as this is the third time this has been solicited. I will believe it when I see it.

Deadpool Kills Deadpool #1           First he killed the Marvel Universe, then he killed some of the most beloved characters in literature, now he completes the circle, turning his attention onto himself in Deadpool Kills Deadpool #1 (of 4). Deadpool aficionado Cullen Bunn writes and Salva Espin draws what is sure to be the most violent entry into the Deadpool Killogy.

All New X-Men #14 Now           Even though I am switching to trade for All-New X-Men, this is an issue that would be tempting to pick up as Jean Grey faces off against Mastermind, again. He was responsible for Jeans downfall in the past, will this happen again or will Jeans time in this new future have developed a side of herself she never knew? We have already started seeing a slightly darker Jean, and I am hoping to see more.

In a move that is meant to intrigue readers of Fables to hop on the Marvel train by releasing an original Once Upon A Time Premiere Hardcover that ties into the television series continuity. The focus is one of my favorite characters, the evil queen, and features another attempt by her, to capture Snow White. I am not familiar with the team of Dan Thomsen (W) and Corinna Bechko (A) but being a fan of the show I will be checking this out. It ships in August.

That brings an end to our look at Marvel, next we visit their distinguished competition, DC.

April 2013 Marvel Comics Diamond Previews Review

April 2013 Marvel Comics Diamond Previews Review

Age of Ultron #9          Age of Ultron #10We now turn our attention to Marvel Comics and their items shipping in June of 2013. The big story is of course the finale of the first crossover event of the Marvel Now era. The last two issues of Age of Ultron, #9 and #10, hit the shelves. We have already heard about the insertion of the hotly contested, one time Spawn character, Angela, into the Marvel Universe, including involvement from Neil Gaiman, the characters creator, but there is apparently another surprise even bigger, in the works. One of my guesses is the appearance, finally, of Marvelman/Miracleman in the Marvel Universe. June will be an exciting month at the House of Ideas.

Age of Ultron #10AI          A title that has garnered alot of recent attention, since it’s announcement, is an Avengers title. I know that another Avengers title is not normally a reason to get excited since there are plenty to choose from, but Avengers A.I.  returns robots to the forefront of the Marvel Universe. The line up of this team has me curious with Ultron’s son from the Runaways, a Doombot, Vision, and more making up this Pym led squad of Avengers. Age of Ultron #10 A.I. will redefine the role of Pym in the Marvel Universe and it is virtually guaranteed that this will be the kick off to the new Avengers series.

Avengers #14 Now        Over in the Avengers we begin the road to Infinity. Issue #14 of the series by Jonathan Hickman (W), Nick Spencer (W), and Stefano Caselli (A) brings us the official prelude. A.I.M. continues  to be a thorn in the side of the Avengers and go even further with the unveiling of the S7 program, while the Earth begins to communicate with something much older than us. After several issues the team is starting to gel and while the cast is immense the creative team is definitely giving each member a moment to shine. If you pick up only one Avengers book this is the one that should be coming home with you.

Superior Spider-Man #12       While I appreciate the writing of Dan Slott, issue #12 of Superior Spider-Man relies on something we have seen multiple times and that is the hero locked in a super-villain prison with those the hero placed there. Again it’s the Raft (how is that place still operational?), this time the cast of trapped civilians includes Jonah, Glory, and Norah.

Iron Man #11 Now       Dale Eaglesham is providing some top notch art on Iron Man and the preview pages in #11, written by Kieron Gillen, might be enough for me to check out this book, for the “Secret Origin of Tony Stark” storyline.

Uncanny X-Force #6 Now       Sam Humphries writes Uncanny X-Force #6 & 7, with a TBA artist (I get worried when creative teams are TBA this close to release), and brings us a Fantomex centric story. Since the character has been split into three I have been wanting a story that details their relationship with Betsy’s, and it looks like this will be that story. We still have Bishop running around but my interest in him as a character is miniscule to begin with. For me Fantomex is the draw!

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #24       I may pick up Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #24 for three reasons, Cloak, Dagger, and the Ultimate take on Power Pack. Brian Michael Bendis (W) has a great knack not just for finding a natural voice for the characters but also reintroducing characters, and concepts, in a fresh way, and not an expected way.

Wolverine and X-Men #31       I left Wolverine and the X-Men shortly after the first year of stories but issue #31 by Jason Aaron (W) and Nick Bradshaw (A) begins a storyline that may pull me back in. The Hellfire Club, the current lineup introduced during the first year, makes their move, and starts their own school, The Hellfire Academy. With a faculty composed of some of the deadliest mutants on Earth, and a student body taken from the Jean Grey School, this story promises conflicts galore, especially when Wolverine is on the hunt to get the kidnapped students back before they cross the line and enter a life of villainy.

X-Factor #257       June also sees the first two parts of a six part storyline in X-Factor #257 & 258. “The End of X-Factor” promises big changes for the team of mutant detectives. If this truly is the end of the team it is appropriate that Peter David writes the closing chapter. With the small but loyal fan following of this book has I would be surprised to see it disappear entirely, instead I could see it getting a late Marvel Now relaunch with Peter David still helming, one would hope.

Fury Max #13       One of comics best kept secrets ends in June with the 13th issue of Fury MaxGarth Ennis (W) and Goran Parlov (A) . This book is one of the best war comics I have read, and that says alot since the war genre is one that never interests me. Garth finds a voice for Fury that is believable from the beginning and this is a Fury I would love to see in the mainstream Marvel Universe. If you haven’t been picking this up it is worth getting the back issues for, or even waiting for the trade, which I am hoping is oversized.

These are the highlights from Marvel in June. See you soon when we look at the back of the book for all of the other publishers offerings.

March 2013 Marvel Comics Diamond Previews Review

March 2013 Marvel Comics Diamond Previews Review

The March issue of Previews is out now and it lists everything shipping in May. This means it is time to dive in and see what comic book related merchandise will be making a dent in our bank accounts. We will start with Marvel.

Age of Ultron #7         Marvel Now is no longer the big news. Ultron has become the word of the day, or really the word of a three month period, as Age of Ultron continues on. I am excited to see Carlos Pacheco providing art on this title. I have been a fan of his since his JLA run with Grant Morrison, then his Avengers Forever work blew me away. I cannot wait to see him loose in the Marvel Universe again.

Age of Ultron #8         Issue #7 (of 10) of the Age of Ultron shows yet another Marvel Universe, this time created by two Marvel heroes. I am not sure what the goal of this second Earth is, but I look forward to finding out. I do have a slight concern that they are attempting to pack too much into this storyline. Issue #8 is also coming out in May.

Fearless Defenders #4AUAvengers Assemble #15AUUncanny Avengers #8AU         There are a couple of Age of Ultron tie ins coming our way in May. Fearless Defenders is taking advantage of the crossover to boost sales no doubt as Fearless Defenders #4AU comes our way, joining Avengers Assemble #15AU, and Uncanny Avengers #8AU. Avengers Assemble finds Ms. Marvel teaming up with Captain Britain trying to save whats left of London, while in Uncanny the Apocalypse Twins lets their presence be known. I am a fan of this type of tie in numbering. It allows the individual series to continue on without being paused because of a crossover, which has always irked many comic book fans.

Avengers #11         I admit that I was wavering after issue #2 of the Avengers, would I keep it or remove it from my pull list. I decided to try a couple of more issues. I am a fan of Hickman but have to remember it is all about the build up and the intertwined story layers, and then came issue #6, the issue spotlighting the origin, or parts of the origin, for the new Captain Universe. I am hooked. I want to explore this Captain Universe more, and find out more about who she was before, and why she was running, and was the accident really an accident? So many questions and I intend to stay a reader until I have all my answers. I hope I have even more questions by then. Avengers #11 focuses on Shang Chi. Captain Marvel, Black Widow, Spider-Woman, Cannonball, and Sunspot join in the adventure at one of the fanciest casino’s in Hong Kong.

Avengers #12         Avengers #12 brings Hyperion and Captain Universe to the Savage Land, along with Spider-Man, Thor and Hawkeye. Hong Kong, the Savage Land and at least 11 Avengers, in one month? Yes please. Hickman tried his best at the team coming together type of story but it was uneven at best. He seems to have his groove on finally.

All-New X-Men #11         If there is any star that shines brighter than all others out of all of the Marvel Now titles it is Bendis’s All-New X-Men, and issue #11 is a game changer as one of the original X-Men joins Cyclops and his crew.

We get an opportunity to revisit Iron Man during Armor Wars II from the creative team that helped define Tony Stark and his suited alter ego. Issues 258.1 – 258.4 bring us an untold story and if the art is correct we get to see Stingray, a character that I think is horribly under used. Fans of Armor Wars II should check this out, I will be.

Avengers - The Enemy Within #1         Avengers: The Enemy Within (a.k.a. BUY CAPTAIN MARVEL) begins with a #1 issue. DeConnick is a wonderful writer Captain Marvel is a book that more people should be reading. Captain Marvel cannot do the one thing she loves the most, fly. With her ego at it’s lowest point she has to join the Avengers in confronting remnants of the teams past which are popping up all over Manhattan. This is worth taking a look at for fans of the characters, the writer, or fun superhero comics in general.

Dark Avengers #190         The book that seemed to have no direction, or impact, and a false numbering pedigree, comes to an end in Dark Avengers #190. The relevance of that title ended when Dark Reign came to a close. Jeff Parker is a very competent writer but that never was apparent in this title. Hopefully he can find his voice on his next Marvel project.

A couple of collections of note are coming our way in May. The first is the 10th Anniversary Edition HC of the Neil Gaiman (W) and Andy Kubert (A) masterpiece Marvel 1602. This collects the eight issues of the original series that tells the tale of our favorite Marvel heroes during the reign of Queen Elizabeth, over 400 years ago. It is impressive when a book stands up to time as well as this one has. I am excited to add this to my collection.

Spider-Man 2099 TP vol 01         Spider-Man 2099 Vol. 1 TPB is back in print, which means his character should be impacting the main marvel universe very soon. Peter David has many runs of note but this is one of my favorites. The art team of Rick Leonardi and Kelley Jones brings Peter’s words to life with this collection of the first 10 issues of the book. This is a deep and multi layered look at corrupt governments which are in turn controlled by mega-corporations. This will be living on bookshelf in May.

Now that the dust has settled for the most part I am not sure if Marvel Now delivered. I am collecting less Marvel now then prior to the change. At the end of the day the important things are the numbers. If it has boosted sales for the line, that is good for the whole industry, as the New 52 launch proved, regardless of my feelings. I may not like everything that is published but it would be a pretty boring industry if everything was the same, and everyone liked the same thing, our hobby would be a pretty boring one.

See you soon when we take a look at DC Comics and their May offerings.
