October 2012 DC Comics Diamond Previews Review

Change in employment has definitely altered my schedule, and my buying habits. Budget restraints have forced me to put comic book purchases on hold, and it will be about three more weeks until I pick up, and I cannot wait. I need a static schedule again, and I think it will get that way soon. Anyway, enough about me, let’s look at DC Comics and what they have for us in December.

Justice League #15Aquaman #15          Over in Justice League and Aquaman they begin a cross-over called “Throne of Atlantis”. This reminds me a little of Namor and Marvel’s Atlantis and their attack on the surface world. The similarities are hopefully only thematic. Rumors indicate that this is the storyline that is one of the catalysts for the new Justice League of America series launching in February. Justice League #15 is also the issue where the new artists, Ivan Reis, and Joe Prado debut. The origin of Shazam continues in the back up feature. When are they going to launch his own monthly already? With the Zero issue focusing on him, it is a little surprising they haven’t spring boarded him into his own monthly. With the recent cancellations announced there are sure to be new series launching in February, unless 52 isn’t the magic number for DC Comics anymore. We will have to wait and see what the February solicitations have for us.

Wonder Woman #15          Orion in Wonder Woman? The introduction of the New Gods? Yes please! Wonder Woman has proven to be an amazing series, with a direction that is so completely different from what has come before and it has been welcome. Wonder Woman is one of my must reads each month, and with the re-introduction of Jack Kirby’s cosmic addition to the DC Universe, it proves itself to be unexpected, and incredibly exciting. I cannot even begin to imagine the connection between the Amazon warrior and the New Gods.

Batman #15Detective #15Batman and Robin #15Batgirl #15

Batman #13 proved to be one of the scariest takes on the Joker I have ever seen. The “Death in the Family” crossover continues in Batman #15, Detective Comics #15, Batman and Robin #15, Batgirl #15, Nightwing #15, Teen Titans #15, and Red Hood and the Outlaws #15. I am not normally a follower of Batman but that 13th issue kicked my butt. I may not buy the single issues but I will be picking up the collected edition for this, much the same way I am sure to pick up the “Court of Owls” collected edition. Scott Snyder is pulling me slowly into Batman, and if you have not been reading it, get #13, and come back for more.

Nightwing #15Teen Titans #15Red Hood and the Outlaws #15

Birds of Prey #15

The solicitation for Birds of Prey #15 indicate that they lose a team member. With the reveal of the Justice League of America roster, and Katana featured prominently on the cover this would be the issue where she bows out and heads to the big league, with a government controlled big league.

Green Lantern #15Green Lantern Corps #15Red Lanterns #15Green Lantern New Guardians #15

The Bat Family has “Death of a Family” and the Green Lantern family of titles continues on with further chapters in “Rise of the Third Army”. I do not follow the Green Lantern books so there is not much I can say about them. Much like the Bat Books I do feel that there are too many titles in the line. Red Lanterns seemed to have avoided the chopping block with the latest wave of cancellations but I can’t help but wonder if and when Red Lanterns will be joining them.

Phantom Stranger #3Sword of Sorcery #3          I was prepared to love Phantom Stranger, and not like Sword of Sorcery but I had it backwards. The art by Tony Bedard, and the wonderful writing of Christy Marx has turned Sword of Sorcery into one of my favorites. With Amethyst joining Justice League Dark I look forward to more of our Gemworld Princess’s adventures, both on Earth and in her own realm. This is fantasy done well and the sillier aspects of the characters original run have been polished into something new, modern, and entirely enjoyable. It may look like it is marketed towards a female demographic but there is enough action to bring the boys back to watch the young Princess’s adventures. Get this book! #3 has the confrontation between Amethyst and her evil Aunt Mordiel. As for Phantom Stranger, the less said the better. Dan Didio did it right with O.M.A.C. but with Phantom Stranger there seems to be some kind of disconnect that I can’t quite put my finger on.

Animal Man #15Swamp Thing #15Frankenstein Agent of SHADE #15          My favorite cross-over at the moment is Rotworld. Issues #13 of Animal Man, Swamp Thing, and Frankenstein, Agent of S.H.A.D.E. all did an amazing job of world building, showing us the dramatic affects that the Rot has brought about in its conquest of the world. This dark future for the DC Universe is a very scary place and issue #15 of each of these series will bring us further into the conflict and with any luck give us a sign of hope because with the first chapters of this storyline under their belt they have shown one thing, the Rot infested DC Universe is a dark and scary place to reside. I hope they do a collected edition of this cross-over, it would be one of the rare times I double dip but this is an epic arc that deserves to be collected under one cover.

Team 7 #3          Team 7 is another book I was ready to write off but it grabbed me and pulled me in. It reminds me of a combination of Checkmate, and the best of Wildstorm. The betrayals will run deep, and even though the series takes place five years in the past, and we know where several of these characters end up I find myself on the edge of the seat as I read the book. Granted they have only released the Zero issue, and the official number 1, I still know that the second, and third issue will keep that feeling going. One can hope. The books I have latched onto since the beginning of the New 52 have stayed, with the exception of Frankenstein, so I am going to take my love of this title as a good thing, and just assume it will be around for awhile.

GI Combat #7          G.I. Combat #7 brings that war themed series to an end. Cannot say I am really surprised since this is essentially the replacement for another failed war comic, Men of War. I think DC Comics should take a break from this genre for awhile, or perhaps launch a dedicated series such as a New 52 Unknown Soldier series, just a thought.

Human Bomb #1          I have every belief that one of the new series that will launch during the first or second quarter of 2013 will be Freedom Fighters. After mini’s dedicated to the Ray, and Phantom Lady, we now have Human Bomb #1 (of 4) coming our way in December. Justin Grey and Jimmy Palmiotti bring the story and legend Jerry Ordway brings the art. The mini’s to date have not really captured my attention with the exception of the Ray, which had allot of good concepts, and an amazing character design that paid respect to the past while looking to the future. Phantom Lady might do the same but it is one of many books sitting in my pull pile at my comic book store.

Punk Rock Jesus #6          My DC Comics Pick of the Month goes to Punk Rock Jesus #6. This issue brings this mini-series to a close and Sean Murphy did something I almost wish he hadn’t. He makes me want more of this world. Chris (DNA descendant of Jesus) is a rock star, and will his heritage define him, or will he become something much different than the one that came before him? This issue takes place in Jerusalem and promises to show exactly the type of deity that Chris is.

Well that is DC Comics for December, and from what I see there is some interesting books coming out. I hope that DC can maintain some of that New 52 momentum against Marvel, who promises to steal back some of their market share with Marvel Now! I am rooting for you DC.

Avengers vs X-Men #12

WARNING – This article contains spoilers relating to the end of Avengers Vs. X-Men so if you do your best to avoid them, read Avengers Vs. X-Men #12 and then come back here.

Hello comic book fans. It is Previews time again, and that means taking a peak through the pages and seeing what the different publishers have for us, as well as some possible gift ideas for fans of the fantastic or perhaps someone who has never picked up a comic book before. December, and the holidays, is a perfect time to indoctrinate someone new into this exciting and constantly evolving hobby.

Avengers vs X-Men logo

We are going to start this month with Marvel. With the conclusion of Avengers Vs. X-Men upon us the Marvel Universe is a very different place. There was a fair amount of bad reviews surrounding the storyline but it provided something that not many other cross-overs could, a sense of closure, real change, and renewal. House of M was the opening salvo that led the inhabitants of the 616 universe to where they are now. Unlike Dark Reign, which really didn’t create any permanent change and really was just a chance to re-brand, Avengers Vs. X-Men has created real change. Marvel has taken advantage of this by shaking up the creative teams, and launching new chapters for many, if not most, of Marvel’s most recognizable characters, and concepts.

Thunderbolts #1Thunderbolts #2          The first book listed is perhaps one of the most drastically changed, Thunderbolts. The team is completely different from any previous incarnation and features five characters who do not function well in a team environment, who now have to act as a team. Red Hulk has hand picked Elektra, Deadpool, Punisher, and Venom to make up the roster. With a team like that and a writer like Daniel Way you can be sure that the threats will be big, and the response by General “Thunderbolt” Ross and his team will be even bigger. Steve Dillon provides the art and if the preview pages are any indication he has the right kind of style to bring the over the top violence (with the above cast would you expect anything less?) to the page.

Avengers #2          Jonathan Hickman, one of Marvel’s best writer’s, and Jerome Opena, a powerhouse of a penciler are ushering in the next era for the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, with the first two issues of The Avengers. 18 team members have been announced including some surprises (Cannonball, and Sunspot), and those you would expect (the movie line up of the Avengers). Mr. Hickman has stated that the roster will actually expand to 22 members. With a line up that size it is a good thing this book will be shipping twice a month. The other aspect I am looking forward to is the done in one stories that Mr. Hickman has also mentioned in relation to this title. The Marvel Universe is a much different world after Avengers Vs. X-Men, and those changes have forced the Avengers to think globally, and the cast size showcases that. I am psyched for another spin on the current flagship franchise of Marvel Comics.

Cable and X-Force #1Cable and X-Force #2          The first two issues of the first of two promised X-Force titles, Cable and X-Force, are released in December. I am not sure why but this line up of characters speaks to me. Separately I like the characters, but they aren’t a draw for me, but Domino, Colossus, Dr. Nemesis, Forge, and the epitome of the 90’s, Cable, fill the pages of this book, and together, I am intrigued by the line up. From the looks of the early art previews I wonder if Pyotr is done with Cytorak? Dennis Hopeless isn’t a writer that has really wowed me but with Salvador Larroca providing the art I will definitely give this book a try. The team is wanted and on the run, and with Cable leading, and, from the solicitations, recruiting the team, this book might be the grittier of the two X-Force books. We will have to see what the other book has to offer when announced.

Avengers Arena #1          The gritty award of the month might have to go to my Marvel Pick of the Month, and that is Avengers Arena. For months I had mentioned how Avengers Academy seemed to have lost its purpose and quickly derailed after the initial arc. This gives those kids a purpose, and that purpose is to survive. As a fan of Battle Royale I am anxious to see a similar premise applied to the teens of the Marvel Universe. We see the Avengers Academy kids, a couple of the Runaways, Darkhawk, and students of the Braddock Academy having to resort to methods they never imagined when Arcade pits them all against each other at a newly revamped Murder World. The creative team of Dennis Hopeless (again), and Kev Walker on art, have gone on record as saying that this book will have a body count, and no one is safe. Count me in!

Uncanny Avengers #3          Uncanny Avengers #1 proved to be an amazing read, with Rick Remember proving, yet again, that the Avengers is right where he belongs. John Cassaday’s art is always a joy to look at, and even though when I see the likes of Captain America, and Thor on the same page it automatically feels like an Avengers book, the way Rick weaved the dialogue, creating a smooth interaction between Havok and Captain America, allowed it to feel natural. This is definitely a great way to start off the Marvel Now! Initiative, and a good way to weave the X-Universe in with the rest of the toys in the sandbox. Issue #3 of the series is out in December and I say pick it up! Go and get #1, and get #2 held for you because if the first issue was any indication, this is a ride you will not want to stop!

All-New X-Men #3All-New X-Men #4          Some of the biggest fallout is sure to come in the pages of the All-New X-Men #4 where the original 5 X-Men meet their counterparts. The meeting between the original Cyclops and the current one who just murdered their mentor in cold blood is sure to be intense, to say the least. The preceding issue, #3, shows us the status of the Phoenix 5 once the dust cleared. I cannot wait, and am a little nervous, about the status of Emma in the Marvel Now world, and with this book being the flagship X-Book I hope it can provide me those answers.

Amazing Spider-Man #699.1          Amazing Spider-Man #699.1 brings us the return of Morbius the Living Vampire, no doubt this will lay some of the groundwork for his own, upcoming solo series. That is the only reason I am picking up this book. I have normally found the .1 books to not deliver in terms of story, and I have yet to read one that actually felt important, but this is one .1 that seems to count. Although I have a feeling it also could have been the #0 issue for Morbius, but it helps having Spider-Man’s marquee appeal.

Amazing Spider-Man #700          An end of another era happens at Marvel in December. Amazing Spider-Man #700 is the final issue of that series. With the recent announcement that Peter Parker will not be slinging the webs in Superior Spider-Man #1, it makes one wonder what exactly is going to go down in these pages, and if Peter Parker will be bowing out of the 616 universe, much like his Ultimate counterpart did? I am sure Peter Parker will still be around, and considering that they never undid the whole Mephisto debacle, I believe Dan Slott when he says that this is going to break the internet in half.

Uncanny X-Force #35          Writer extraordinaire Rick Remember, and uber artist Phil Noto brings us the conclusion of Final Extinction and this volume of Uncanny X-Force in issue #35. The recent revelations about the line up of Psylocke’s X-Force makes me curious about the end of this volume. Notably a female Fantomex?, Spiral?, Mohawk Storm? This must be one heck of a transition issue. With Wolverine off the team, (thankfully, no knocks against the scrappy Canuck but how many books can he appear in without the powers of DC’s Flash?) does Psylocke have the strength to carry on the teams mission? This final issue of Remember’s X-Force should hopefully provide closure to Wolverine’s team, and help set up the answers to the above question. Kudos to Marvel for putting Ororo back in the ‘hawk.

That brings us to the end of our look at Marvel, up next will be DC Comics. Watch for it shortly.

Space 1999 - Aftershock and Awe HC

It is now time to dig into the back of the Previews Magazine for product shipping this November. It looks like a re solicitation has popped up. Space: 1999 Aftershock and Awe, a 160 page original graphic novel is back. The reason I say back is because it was already solicited. This has me excited to return to the campy but still classic Space: 1999 universe.

Jughead #216          Big news on the Archie Comic Publications front. Jughead will be the next character to be updated. This means that we will see his title go on hiatus. Issue #216 is solicited for November, and they are no doubt waiting until after the holiday season to give the character a little bit of a rest, before he comes back shiny and new. With the ground that Archie has been covering over the past couple of years, and the way they have shown their relevance to today’s world, I cannot wait to see what they do with one of the corner stones of Riverdale.

Fashion Beast #3          Avatar is putting out one of the most interesting mini-series right now. Namely Fashion Beast. I am not a fan of Alan Moore, more because of his personality than anything else, but I have to give credit where it is due. The first issue didn’t really answer any questions it posed but it offered enough questions and bizarre situations that I cannot wait to continue on this adventure. Society is mad and wants to tame this fashion beast before the world is destroyed in nuclear fire. Even though it was originally written thirty years ago it still has a strong societal connection that resonates with the global political stage of today’s world.

Supurbia #1          Boom Studios has a couple of books to keep an eye on out in November. The first one is the #1 issue of the ongoing Supurbia series. Also out on the same day is the trade collection of the first mini-series. The original creative team of creator/writer Grace Randolph, and artist Russell Dauterman are back to tell further stories of superhero families and the housewives that run them. Phil Noto does a beautiful incentive cover to commemorate the release.

Hypernaturals #5          The Hypernaturals is a series that I was ready to drop and then I reread the first issue and fell in love with the series. I’ll chalk it up to not being in the best frame of mind when I originally read it. DNA deliver a sci fi epic, right out of the gate, and never slowing down. They balance the smaller character moments well with the bigger set pieces. The mysteries keep building, and I personally hope the team stays missing for awhile because I am really digging the cast at the moment. Thinkwell is one of my favorite new characters to enter the world of fiction this year. Issue #5 brings them closer to the big bad and it is one big bad, big enough, and bad enough to destroy the Quantinuum.

Adventure Time TP Vol 01          Hailed by critics as one of the best comic book on the stands this year is Adventure Time. The first collection of 128 pages reprints the first issues of the monthly series. One of the big draws for me is the cover art, and this trade collection gets a brand new cover!

Masks #1          Ironically the Back of the Book – Pick of the Month is from Dynamite. This is for one reason only, fully painted interiors by Alex Ross. Dynamite begins it’s next crossover (hopefully better than the dreadful Prophecy), with Masks #1. The series is set in 1938 and brings the best of pulp into 32 wonderful pages. The crossover includes the Shadow, Green Hornet, Kato, the Spider and many, many more. Their enemy is a fascist police state, put in place by the government offices of New York State. I honestly would not notice if the story was good or bad, although Chris Roberson is quite a talent, but it is Alex Ross that makes me call this book an instant classic. If the story is captivating that is icing on the cake.

Boys #72          Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson bring their long running, and fan favorite series, The Boys to an end with #72. I have never followed the series but now upon it’s completion I am now thinking that this should be added to my trade wish list. People I know who read this are loyal to this book and they are saddened by it’s ending but expecting a huge payoff. I hope for their sake they get their big ending instead of getting a “Lost” style ending.

Overstreet Guide to Collecting Comics SC Vol 01 Jusko coverOverstreet Guide to Collecting Comics SC Vol 01 Newton cover          A book that promises to appeal to new collectors and those of us with years of experience is the Overstreet Guide to Collecting Comics Volume 1. This gives you all the information you need to collect, store, grade, sell, comic books. Just like the comics that it talks about, it too has a variant. One cover is the Joe Jusko Spider-Man or a Don Newton Silver Age Justice League cover. My personal choice would be the Silver Age Justice League cover.

Attack on Titan GN Vol 03          I don’t often discuss Manga but a good friend of mine got me hooked on Attack on Titan. This book has been making waves, selling millions upon millions of copies in its homeland, and garnering quite allot of positive press from critics. Volume 3 is out in November. Don’t hesitate to ask your comic book store if they can bring in Volumes 1 and 2, you will be happy you did. The basic premise has a small band of human survivors trying to live in a land roamed by huge humanoids that can pick up the people and enjoy them as a snack. In the first volume we are introduced to a titan that stands above their 100 meter walls. The action moves fast, and in the first volume the body count is ridiculous. It shows you exactly what kind of world these kids need to grow up in. It is dark, violent, and raw. This is a story that is being told no matter what happens, and the writer is not afraid to take chances, never hesitating to leave the reader breathless.

Lost Dogs GN          Top Shelf Productions is releasing the first professional work from Jeff Lemire, Lost Dogs Graphic Novel. This came before Essex County, and Sweet Tooth. Anyone who knows me knows I love Jeff Lemire. I have only been a fan for a short time, first noticing him during the New 52 relaunch, but since then I have been reading his earlier work and I look forward to enjoying this tale of a powerful man and the possibility that he could lose everything he has ever known.

That’s it for November. Next month we look at the December releases.

Good Reading!

September 2012 Alternate Comics Diamond Previews Review part 1

September 2012 Alternate Comics Diamond Previews Review part 1

I’m going to change things up a bit. Starting in this column, I am moving up Valiant and Dynamite, they will be with the rest of the “Back of the Book” section. This isn’t a slight on Dynamite’s publishing roster but more an appreciation for the intricate world building that Valiant has demonstrated thus far in their publishing line up. The releases have been well spaced, while still showing a world coming together, that is thematically, and story wise, a dozen times bigger then the universes that are homes to both Marvel, and DC. Valiant’s release schedule reminds me of a condensed method of the Marvel style of movie-verse building. A deliberate, and appreciated, slow roll out of the big players, yet you know that they are going to collide in some fashion, and when they do it will be big.

Shadowman #1          Well, with a paragraph about Valiant starting up this article, let’s look at what they have coming to us in November. The first book is also my Valiant Pick of the Month, the series premiere of Shadowman. Shadowman was another staple of the original Valiant universe and also one of the power players in that landscape. This new series is being written by Justin Jordan, and Patrick Zircher, with art provided by Patrick Zircher. It sets the stage for the story of the Shadowman, a protector of New Orleans, and the only one that can protect it from things that go bump in the night. I wish this series would be released in black and white.

The preview pages in Previews are stunning and help keep a dark edge on the book. I find that the artist’s true vision can really be seen without the addition of color. Books of a darker nature also work with a black and white style really well, again allowing the art to do allot of the storytelling. Horror needs to be raw and visceral, and a black and white story is raw as it fully exposes the artists ability, forcing them to fully relay the emotional impact through expressions. Patrick Zircher is clearly able to convey that emotion. Maybe a chase variant without color? Doubtful, but I would enjoy seeing one.

Bloodshot #5          Master storyteller, Duane Swierczynski continues to ratchet up the tension, and the questions in Bloodshot. #5 starts a new storyline, and is the perfect jumping on point. The title character is slowly getting his life, and his memories back. His mind a virtual puzzle, with other people controlling the pieces. He wants his own life back and know who he truly was before he got turned into what he now is. One man can give him all the answers, but at a cost, the death of his creators. I cannot rave enough about this book and all the others that Valiant is putting out. I missed the initial run of the Valiant Universe, having been fully ensconced in the Marvel Universe at the time.

Harbinger #6          Faith is going to become one of my favorite characters of 2012, and she returns with her much dreamed of super abilities in Harbinger #6. The way Joshua Dysart has sprinkled her into the first arc definitely points to her becoming pivotal. I have heard that she did play a rather prominent part in the original run. With Valiant releasing hard covers of their earlier work I will definitely be paying a visit to the original Harbinger if, and when, they release it.

Archer & Armstrong #4 Pearson coverArcher & Armstrong #4 Doe cover          Fred Van Lente and Clayton Henry have done a wonderful job of bringing us the best buddy book on the stands right now. Archer & Armstrong delivers two strong leads who are supposed to be enemies but it is clear to see that the chemistry between the two opposes that idea. The dialogue is smooth and has a natural flow to it, especially considering the religion based conspiracy theory that fills the pages. The Eternal Warrior also makes their debut in issue #4 in November, plus a trip to Himalayas.

BTVS Willow Wonderland #1          Dark Horse Comics shines the light on my second favorite Buffy character (first going to Drusilla) Willow Rosenberg, and her quest to return magic to the world. Willow and magic are synonymous for me. Jeff Parker is providing the words with Brian Ching bringing the pictures. One of my favorite cover artists, David Mack, also provides a stunning image of Willow, done in a way that makes her seem even more magical than she is.

Colder #1          My Dark Horse Comics Pick of the Month goes to a book that grabbed me with the cover, it could very well be the most disturbing, and amazing cover of the year. Colder #1 (of 5) grabs me with the cover, and puts DC’s disturbing new take on the Joker to shame, almost making Joker seem like a Disney character. The solicits point to a man who is dying, but can also cure peoples madness by “stepping” inside of them. The only problem is his health. He never gets sick, but his temperature is dropping, and when it hits zero, he dies. Paul Tobin (Writer) and Juan Ferreyra (Artist) are crafting what is sure to be a sleeper hit.

Edgar Allan Poe Conquer Worm one shot          If any publisher is going to adapt Edgar Allan Poe it should be Dark Horse, no offense to the publishers that have previously tried. One of his most well known tales, The Conqueror Worm, is being adapted into a 32 page black and white one shot. Richard Corben is a 2012 Eisner Hall of Fame inductee and you don’t need to wonder why when you look at his long and extensive career. His style helped define Heavy Metal magazine and recently he left his mark on Hellboy. Conqueror Worm is a story that can have multiple meanings for anyone who reads it, and with Richard Corben involved that will be a good read, and the first in multiple readings.

Legend of Zelda Hyrule Historia HC          A book for video game aficionados finally receives a translation into English and a North American release. Nintendo fans will no doubt jump onto The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia which hits shelves November. This book has everything for fans of Link. This is an unparalleled hardcover collection, including the complete history of our hero in green, including a complete chronology for all of the games. The designer of The Legend of Zelda, as well as Donkey Kong and Mario, Shigeru Miyamoto, provides an introduction to this 248 page book.

Massive #6          For an amazing slow burn readers should check out Bryan Wood’s The Massive. The world of DMZ could thematically exist in the same universe as this tale. Bryan Wood layers the characters relationships covering the wide range of human emotions. Each issue tackles the changes of the human condition that the Crash has forced upon the world.

Judge Dredd #1          Judge Dredd has hit North American theaters and now he comes to the comic book stores, and not as an import. IDW releases Judge Dredd #1 as the beginning of a new series of stories in a monthly ongoing. Duane Swierczynski has reinvigorated Bloodshot at Valiant and with the stories he is telling with that character, one cannot help but expect that same level of talent being unleashed on one of the UK’s hardest hitting, and enduring creations. After 35 years Judge Dredd is still protecting the 400 million residents of the 22nd century Megacity One. Nelson Danile and Paul Gulacy share art duties on what is sure to be a sleeper hit.

My Little Pony Friendship is Magic #1My Little Pony Friendship is Magic #1 variationMy Little Pony Friendship is Magic #1 box set          My IDW Pick of the Month goes to a long awaited comic book adaption of one of the most popular toy and cartoon franchises, My Little Pony. My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic turned me into a Brony and I cannot wait to see what adventures Katie Cook and Andy Price are going to put Twilight Sparkle and her pony friends through. I am not typically one for variants but they are collecting all the covers into one box set where you will get all six of the variants in a slipcase cover, and since I will be adding this to my pull list I will especially look forward to the Jill Thompson cover. In this first issue the Mane Six have to investigate the strange behaviors of others in Ponyville before it’s too late. And just for the record Rainbow Dash is my favorite!

Saga #7          Even if Saga wasn’t the only Image book I was going to mention it still would have been my Image Comics Pick of the Month. After a brief (felt way too long) hiatus #7 is back and is the first issue of a new arc. This issue picks up right where the last left off, Marko, Alana, and their newborn, in space, in a ship made of wood. Allot of questions were asked in the first arc and I am expecting a few answers, and even more questions to come up with issue 7, and I look forward to revisiting this world with Brian K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples.

September 2012 DC Comics Diamond Previews Review

September 2012 DC Comics Diamond Previews Review

Justice League #14          It is time to turn our attention to DC Comics and what they have heading our way from them in November. DC continues planting the seeds for the 2013 Trinity War cross-over with Justice League #14. For those wanting to have the complete story this seems like the ground floor you would want to be on. I find it a little strange that a title that has only had 15 issues (that’s including the Zero Issue) is already looking at radically changing the dynamic of the team. Seems a bit soon, but so far the New 52 seems to have a plan in place and part of that plan would seem to be this Trinity War.

Earth 2 #6          Earth 2#6 seems to finally be leading to the formation of the much missed Justice Society, or a version of it at the very least. This is also the final battle between this Earth’s avatar of the Green, and the Rot, Green Lantern vs,  Grundy. Who will win? Chances are it will be Green Lantern, but in this new DC Universe one can never be sure.

Superboy #14Supergirl #14Superman #14

For fans of the Super-verse they have brought you “H’el on Earth”. The first chapters are spread amongst Superboy, Supergirl, and Superman, all in their 14th issues, and introduces us to a new Kryptonian, one that can take on the entire Super family, and from the looks of things, not break a sweat. The character apparently will change the course of an entire planet’s fate, but is that planet Earth, or will Krypton, and it’s history be changed? With his anti-Earth views, it may well be Earth, and that may not be a good thing.

Batman #14Batman and Robin #14Batgirl #14

Catwoman #14Suicide Squad #14          The Bat Family have a little cross-over of their own going on, not as large as Court of Owls, but one that many Bat fans have been clamoring for, the return of the cosmetically challenged Joker, in “Death of the Family”. Batman, Batman and Robin, Batgirl, Catwoman, and Suicide Squad (all 14th issues) are the first rounds in the Joker’s apparently deadlier, and more violent attack on everything that Bruce holds dear.

Green Lantern #14Green Lantern New Guardians #14          The third mini cross-over solicited in the New 52 for November is the continuing “Rise of the Third Army”. I have to admit to not following the Green Lantern family but from the solicitations, this looks big, and it looks like the Guardians are playing a very dangerous game, with the survival of the galaxy at stake. Oh, and the Justice League pay a little visit to the newest Green Lantern, and of course we will have the obligatory fight scene, where there will be misunderstandings and grudges built. This is sure to also play into the Trinity War in some form, especially with Baz becoming part of the recently announced Justice League of America.

Animal Man #14Swamp Thing #14Frankenstein Agent of Shade #14

The cross-over I have been looking forward to the most continues in the 14th issues of Animal Man, Swamp Thing and Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E.. I, of course, am talking about “Rotworld”Animal Man guest stars John Constantine, who somehow has managed to avoid being changed by the Rot, but how? Swamp Thing makes his way to Gotham City while combating the horrors that have filled the waterways of Rotworld, and in Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E our anti-hero is looking for a device called the Soul Grinder, the machine used to bring the title character to life, and perhaps the only weapon that can defeat the Rot. All three of these books are my DC Comics Picks of the Month.
