October 2013 Alternate Comics Diamond Previews Review

Terminator Salvation Final Battle #1          Now that we have visited Marvel and DC let’s take a look at what the rest of Previews has to offer us for product shipping as early as December 2013. The retro trend that took pop culture by storm continues to rule a large chunk of the comic book market and Dark Horse plans to encourage that with Terminator: Salvation – The Final Battle. The first issue of the 12 issue series brings the story that brings an end to the stories of John Connor and Skynet. Normally I wouldn’t pay much attention to these licensed properties but with J. Michael Straczynski (W), and Pete Woods (A) on board I am curious enough to check out the first issue.

Halo Escalation #1         Dark Horse launches another ongoing based on a hit video game franchise when Halo: Escalation #1 by Chris Schlerf (W), Sergio Arino (W), Juan Castro (I), and others, comes to the stands in December. Fans of the Halo game series take note, the writer, Christopher Schlerf, is the lead writer of Halo 4 which means this comic book will tie perfectly into the huge world that the franchise has created.

Brain Boy #0         My new favourite series is Dark Horse’s Brain Boy. The first issue completely hooked me with both the writing by Fred Van Lente, and the art by Freddie Williams II (P), and Ego (C), with a five star shout out to the amazing covers by Ariel Olivetti. In December Dark Horse ships a zero issue which reprints the adventures of the egotistical title character from the pages of Dark Horse Presents. I missed out on those stories, and as a huge fan of the first issue this is coming home with me. I highly recommend this book to anyone curious about this character.

Breath of Bones A Tale of the Golem HC         There are two reasons I am recommending Breath of Bones: A Tale of the Golem HC; first of all, the creative team is worth the price alone with Steve Niles (W), Matt Santoro (W), and Dave Wachter (A) providing the art and story, secondly is the recent flooding that has done much damage to the home and possessions of Steve Niles. Purchasing this book will undoubtedly help a creator during his time of need. I had decided to bring this book home before the flooding happened but it makes me happy knowing I will enjoy the story and help a creator in the process. The story tells us of a Jewish village where the residents create a monster to help them fight back against the Nazis.

IDW is trying a format I am personally not a fan of but it is sure to draw in fans of the original Star Trek. Star Trek Annual 2013 is put together using screen shots from the original series, but it tells a new story with words provided by legendary creator John Byrne. The tale is a sequel to the classic episode that saw Kirk lose his dearest and oldest friend Pike, but is Pike actually gone? Byrne does not appeal to me, nor do photo based comics but classic Trek fans will no doubt want this for their collection.

Doctor Who vol 3 #16 Doctor Who 3 TP vol 04 Dead Mans Hand Doctor Who Special 2013 #1         IDW puts out the last of it’s Doctor Who titles as their licencing deal comes to a close. The final issue of the monthly series hits with issue #16, the trade vol 4 that collects issues #13-16 follows shortly after. Doctor Who Special 2013 brings the IDW chapter of Doctor Who to a close, with a story that has the Doctor Who coming face-to-face with the actor Matt Smith. For Matt Smith fans this may be the last chance to pick up his comic book appearances since his next regeneration is just around the corner.

The Other Dead #4 The Other Dead #4 sub         The fourth issue of The Other Dead hits in December, and having read the first issue I will be picking up all 6 issues of this mini that tells the story of a zombie apocalypse with a twist, this time the animals are the ones that transmit the virus. What this means is that the cute puppy at your feet or the kitty that is snuggled on your lap could become the living dead, still want to cuddle them? As a self proclaimed cat lover I cannot imagine something so horrific as having to deal with my cute little bundle of fur if she ever turned into a blood thirsty zombie. For zombie fans this is a book worth getting, oh and Obama kicks ass in it, which is another reason this is a must read for me.

Invincible Universe #8         Invincible Universe #8 has a cover that brings to mind one word: Darkseid, which is unfortunate since that is a DC character. Sadly that is the only thing I noted in the Image solicitations.

Afterlife with Archie is going to be one of the sleeper hits of the year. The art by Francesco Francavilla brings a dark, mature edge to a still recognizable and iconic Riverdale and it’s characters. Bringing in Sabrina as the root cause of the zombies is an amazing idea in the first issue and I cannot wait to see how Roberto Aquirre Sacasa continues to blend the young reader friendly world into something dark, horrific, and decidedly mature. Issue #4 is out in December and is worth picking up site unseen.

Rover Red Charlie #1 Rover Red Charlie #1 wrap         Being the animal lover I am, there are a few comic book series that have captured my attention over the years including We3, The Other Dead, The Liberator, and a few others, because they have featured an animals perspective on well known comic book archetypes and story-lines. Avatar, a publisher that is moving up my must read list pretty fast, is bringing us the tale of the end of the world from the perspective of our furry friends. Garth Ennis is an interesting and intriguing choice for a storyteller of this nature but I am down and more than willing to give this mini series a go. Rover Red Charlie #1 hits in December and should be checked out!

Doc Savage #1         Dynamite Comics brings us a pulp series featuring one of the most prominent and well known pulp fiction characters in the world, Doc Savage. Doc Savage #1 by Chris Roberson (W), Bilquis Everly (A), and obligatory cover by Alex Ross, looks to bring us back to his creation in 1933 and bridge yesterday with today throughout this series. Pulp fans will undoubtedly be checking out this series.

Robotech Voltron #1         Tommy Yune returns to the world of Robotech when he writes the story that brings Robotech and Voltron together in Robotech/Voltron #1 (of 5). Tommy Yune also contributes the covers with interior art provided by Elmer Damaso. This series has it all; Roy Fokker, Zentraedi, Macross Island, the ten lions, all in one series. Anime/manga fans will be nabbing this, so will I.

WWE ongoing #1         The WWE is doing comics. That is about the only thing you will ever hear me say about that. I thought I would mention it for any wrestling fans out there. That being said WWE #1 by Mick Foley (W) and Alitha Martinez (A) is out in December.

Shadowman #13 Shadowman #13 pullbox         A creator shift happens in Valiant’s Shadowman #13 as Peter Milligan takes over as writer with Roberto De La Torre covering art. Milligan has been hit and miss with his work but Shadowman, a story of a man possessed by dark magic, seems right up his alley. I will pick up this issue to see how it goes.

It was a short but sweet look at the rest of Previews and there are some definite gems in the pages. Good reading and see you next month.

October 2013 Marvel Comics Diamond Previews Review

October 2013 Marvel Comics Diamond Previews Review

Inhumanity #1          I am getting more and more confused by Marvel these days, and the December solicits continue that confusion. The follow up to Infinity is the aptly named Inhumanity. What confuses me is whether this is a crossover or a re-branding a la Dark Reign? Either way this “event” kicks off with a launch of a new monthly titled Inhumanity by Matt Fraction (W) and Olivier Coipel (A) which focuses on the Inhuman family and specifically Karnak in the first issue. I enjoy the artwork of Olivier Coipel and hope he stays on the title for awhile before Marvel moves him over to the next event comic.

Mighty Avengers #4.INH New Avengers #13.INH Indestructible Hulk #17.INH Avengers Assemble #22.INHUncanny X-Men #15.INH Avengers AI #7.INH Inhumanity Awakening #1          Now we get to the part that confuses me, the numbering. Several stories are tied into Inhumanity and so people know exactly which we get a .INH at the end of each tie in issue. I would just like to point out that INH is not a number. Putting a banner on the top of the cover makes sense to me, the numbering is just silly. The .INH numbering is added onto Mighty Avengers #4, New Avengers #13, Indestructible Hulk #17, Avengers Assemble #22, Uncanny X-Men #15, and Avengers A.I. #7. Surprisingly only one tie in mini is solicited but being Marvel, I am sure more are on the way. Inhumanity: The Awakening #1 (of 2) continues to showcase the younger generation of Marvel’s heroes. Infinity: The Hunt has done an amazing job of introducing us to some of the younger super powered students that reside in the Marvel Universe (why wasn’t there a Department H run school from Canada?) and if you haven’t tried it, pick it up, along with the Heist mini tied into the event, and here we go further with them and see them stuck in between the new Inhumans and those that want to destroy them. This is brought to you by Matt Kindt (W) and Paul Davidson (A).

Origin II #1         Well acetate covers are making a return and Origin II #1 (of 5) by Kieron Gillen (W) and Adam Kubert (A) bring it to us. My interest in Wolverine is small and while this series will not grace my collection, fans of the canucklehead will undoubtedly pick up this series. This is a strong creative team and hopefully they can add something interesting to a slightly over exposed character.

Avengers #24.Now         Further odd numbering is happening in Avengers when Avengers #24.NOW (again letters are not numbers) by Jonathan Hickman (W) and Esad Ribic (A) hits the shelves in December. While I do enjoy the Avengers and will be picking this up out of curiosity, is it really necessary to change the team again? One of the reasons I ended up shying away from Marvel is because of all the sales inflating stunts they do. They don’t seem to have faith in their own product and instead want to attach all the books to an event, a relaunch, or any other ploy. Let them stand on their own. The Avengers is a great team and it would be nice to see a long-term plan that lets the team gel, grow, and not be bogged down by everything else. There is such a thing as too big. Either way I will be picking up this issue out of curiosity.

Amazing Spider-Man #700.1 Amazing Spider-Man #700.3         Fans of Peter Parker get to see him in the red and blue again as we get Amazing Spider-Man #700.1, .2, .3, and .4 by a slew of creators including David Morrell (W), Joe Casey (W), Jen Van Meter (W), Clay Chapman (W), Klaus Janson (A), Tim Green (A), Emma Rios (A), and Javier Rodriguez (A). With all of the recent hints at upcoming Marvel Now Wave 2 story lines, and new series, I can’t help but wonder if this heralds the return of Peter and the end of Superior. It would almost be a shame because what I have read of Spider-Man since Doc Ock took over has interested me more than when Peter resided in his own body. It is a testament to the talent of Dan Slott to make something so oddball work as well as it does.

Scarlet Spider #26         Scarlet Spider #25 by Chris Yost (W) and David Baldeon (A) brings an end to that series. Sad to see this go but comic book buyers obviously want to see only the headline characters who appear in multiple series instead of giving a shot to something without an X or Avengers in the title. Maybe they will relaunch this as the Superior Scarlet Spider? Probably not, but it would be nice to see Kaine appear in another title. His character has been developed to the point where he shouldn’t be buried in the back of the character closet.

Guardians of Galaxy #10 INF         Having been unjustly removed from Justice League 3000 over at the distinguished competition Kevin Maguire pops over to Marvel for a guest spot drawing the Brian Michael Bendis written Guardians of the Galaxy #10. I will be picking this up just to see Maguires art as he is the master of facial expressions in my opinion, and a tale focusing on Angela and Gamora seems like a perfect fit for Maguire’s style.

All New X-Men #20         It’s interesting how the X-Men of the past have not been on the covers of any of the books since the end of X-Men: Battle of the Atom and issue of All-New X-Men #20 looks to continue that as the cover features X-23, returned from her stint in Avengers Arena, and she is lip locked with a mysterious man who has been blacked out on the cover. If the original X-Men stuck around I would love to see the blacked out figure as Cyclops. Imagine Wolverine’s reaction if she hooked up with past Scott? Soap opera to the extreme!

X-Men #8         Judging from the solicitation art for X-Men #8 by Brian Wood (W) and Terry Dodson (A) it looks like M is joining the book, which would make sense since X-Factor recently ended. I could be wrong since the solicitation text mentions Frenzy, but I am hoping for M.

Wolverine and X-Men #39         It is kind of scary that Wolverine & the X-Men #39 is the highest numbered book put out by Marvel. Probably means it will relaunch soon since it is almost halfway to triple digits and Marvel seems afraid to let books get that high in numbering.

Longshot Saves Marvel Universe #3         The last two issues of Longshot Saves the Marvel Universe comes out in December and features Hulkvengers, Kraven the Phoenix, and many, many more. Christopher Hastings (W) and Jacopo Camagni (A) look to be bringing the fun in a mini-series that I am so excited to read. These will be coming home with me and I hope they bring the enjoyment the solicitations lead me to believe will fill the pages.

X-Men Battle of the Atom HC         A couple of collections are solicited that are of note. As someone who recently switched to collections over monthlies I am anxious for X-Men: Battle of the Atom HC which collects all 8 parts of the epic X-Men crossover is handled by the creative teams of all of the books involved. X-Men from the past, present, future, and even more future make this a time travel story I am excited to read. I did pick up the first issue of the crossover and while it is tough to not pick up the other single issues I can bide my time knowing that they will all be mine under one cover in January. My only dislike is the price point, $49.99 seems a little steep for a 224 page book.

Uncanny X-Force by Rick Remender Omnibus HC         Uncanny X-Force under the guiding hands of Rick Remender was one of my favourite recent runs at Marvel. While I have several of the single issues I won’t be picking this up but urge anyone who hasn’t experienced the X-Men kill squad to grab the 928 page Uncanny X-Force Omnibus HC by Rick Remender. It collects issues #1-35, #5.1, and #19.1, and material from Wolverine Road to Hell #1 in one volume. I hope they do the same with the Secret Avengers, Vol. 1 another stellar Remender book.

Well that’s my look at the somewhat confusing landscape of Marvel. Some interesting books are coming out I just wish they would make things a little easier to follow.

October 2013 DC Comics Diamond Previews Review

October 2013 DC Comics Diamond Previews Review

Forever Evil #4           Time to close off the year 2013 with a look at the October Previews and product shipping beginning in December 2013. DC crosses the halfway mark with their crossover “Forever Evil” with the 4th issue of the 7 issue series. Geoff Johns is crafting the ultimate story of evil winning while still remaining tight lipped about the fate of the heroes, most notably the Justice Leagues. Speaking of the Justice Leagues Forever Evil continues to control Dark, of America, and the original Justice League.

Justice League Dark #26 EvilJustice League #26 Evil         Justice League #26 focuses its attentions on Grid and his actual motivation within the Crime Syndicate, while Justice League Dark #26 showcases the Sea King, who was dead the last time we saw him at the end of “Trinity War”. Both Sea King, and Grid, are two of the three new additions to the New 52 Crime Syndicate, and are two of the characters that fascinate me the most. Aquaman has risen in the ranks of prominence in the New 52, and the idea of an evil counterpart must mean one of the cruelest characters in the Syndicate. I envision the Sea King as a bitter Aquaman who transferred all of his frustrations with how he was perceived into pure, unadulterated evil. With the recent solicitations for the Syndicate action figures I hope that Grid and Sea King have action figure counterparts, maybe in a future 7 figure box set? Hint, hint DC Direct.

Forever Evil Argus #3 Forever Evil Arkham War #3 Forever Evil Rogues Rebellion #3Suicide Squad #26 EvilConstantine #9 EvilTrinity of Sin The Phantom Stranger #14 (Evil)Trinity of Sin Pandora #6          For crossover completists it should be noted that Forever Evil has three mini’s; A.R.G.U.S. #3, Rogues Rebellion #3 and Arkham War #3 solicited for December, in addition to visiting the pages of Suicide Squad #26, Constantine #9, Trinity of Sin: Pandora #6, and Trinity of Sin: The Phantom Stranger #14. With the just announced 18 part crossover: Forever Evil: Blight it seems that DC is trying really hard to push the Dark, and I hope it works. While it seems to be one of the more richly entwined corners of the New 52 universe that not enough people are trying.

Justice League 3000 #1         When the Legion of Superheroes was cancelled, the last issue hinted at the Legion being part of a different universe, possibly Earth 2 and the reason for the clean slate would be Justice League 3000 #1 with the artist Howard Porter handling the drawing duties this time instead of the previously solicited Kevin Maguire. One thing in the solicitation that kind of raised my eyebrow was the description of Howard Porter as legendary. Don’t get me wrong I am a fan of his art, and enjoy how his style has evolved but I wouldn’t put him quite at the level of legendary, and I think soliciting it in that fashion is a bit of a slap to the face of Kevin Maguire who has done stellar work for DC, including the character, and career defining work of Justice League International. While I will be picking up Justice League 3000 #1 I think DC should revisit how they write solicitations.

Batman 66 #6 Aquaman #26         Geoff Johns passes the reigns of Aquaman over to Jeff Parker, a strong writer whose best known work for DC is Batman ’66. Aquaman #26 widens the gap between Mera and Aquaman as the stress of ruling a kingdom that is under threat of destruction tests what there relationship means. I would love to see Mera headline her own mini-series. Her character has been wonderfully developed in the pages of Aquaman and it would be wonderful to see her shine on her own. DC has not had much luck with mini’s in the New 52 but I can hold out hope that Mera could get a chance to shine on her own.

Green Arrow #26         Jeff Lemire (W) and Andrea Sorrentino (A) continue to mesh the television series Arrow with the New 52 series Green Arrow. Issue #26 of the series begins the Outsiders War. Oliver returns to the island where it all began. This run reminds me of the history that was created for Iron Fist over at Marvel when he last had his short lived series. Character defining with a rich tapestry that adds history, and evolves the character far beyond what they were. This book should be going home with more people.

Injustice Gods Among Us #12         With the digital first title Injustice: Gods Among Us coming to an end, that sadly means the end of the print series in issue #12. With the high sales this series receives in digital format it will surely return, probably in the form of mini-series, much like the Smallville model.

Villains Month 3D motion Complete Set         For those of you who missed any of the Villain month titles, DC is correcting their mistakes and releasing a complete set, including all 3-D motion covers, plus the Forever Evil #1 3-D motion cover variant. Even though these are second printings, it would make a nice set for any completest and I am debating picking up a set for myself.

Sandman Overture #2Dead Boy Detectives #1         Vertigo have a couple of notable releases in December. The Dead Boy Detectives, created in the pages of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman get their own monthly title from Toby Litt (W), Mark Buckingham (W, A) and Gary Erskine (A). The series kicks off with Edwin Paine and Charles Rowland returning to St. Hilarions to investigate their own deaths, and in the process are joined by Crystal, who becomes a detective in her own right, and brings the characters into a very modern world. This will be worth checking out for fans of Gaiman’s Sandman universe.

Wake Part One #1         If you missed The Wake by Scott Snyder (W) and Sean Murphy (A) you have your chance in December with The Wake Part One #1, a collection of the first 5 issues of this underwater mystery adventure. Having read only the first issue I will be getting this to get caught up.

Astro City #7         Astro City #7 by Kurt Busiek (W) and Brent Anderson (A) looks to play with the “trinity” of the Astroverse in a story that begins a 4 part epic focusing on Winged Victory, Samaritan, and Confessor.

And that is DC Comics and what they have for us in December. Coming up next, Marvel.
